Rustic Mirror Designs from Traditional Mirrors | Design Shift in 50 years

Within every industry, the style, design, purchase behaviour and overall customer needs change from year to year. Bespoke mirror designs are no exception to this. Every year, we notice a slight shift in customer requests and design queries. The Looking Glass of Bath works with many professional interior designers, who are on the front line of home design and improvement.

We are often faced with the question “Traditional bespoke Mirrors or Contemporary bespoke Mirrors“? This led us to evaluate how designs have changed since we opened our doors many years ago on Walcot Street, Bath, Somerset (United Kingdom).

The largest shift in design requests and trends have been fairly recently. Enquiries and sales have changed dramatically in the last five years or so.

Originally, when we opened in Walker Street in 1987, all our bespoke mirror frames and bespoke frames for pictures were of a traditional design.

traditional mirror design

The traditional design to mirrors and picture frames has been one of the largest and longest mirror design trends that we have noticed in the last 50 years. Our traditional designs are still of high demand, but not compared to some of the new, contemporary styles. You can view our traditional mirrors here, and our contemporary mirrors here. That being said, all of our mirrors can be made to your specific size and requirements. Not only that, but we used to see a lot more requests for antique guilt finishes on our mirrors and picture frames.

Gradually, over the last few years, styles and fashions have changed dramatically in the made to measure mirrors and bespoke mirrors industry. For instance, we now list oxidised finishes, which simply means “rusty”.

The rustic look of mirrors and frames has been a very common trend over the last few years – for mirrors and all areas of interior design. As a company, we are noticing a demand for oxidised “rustic mirror designs” come from the ground up in a very short span of time, as this was previously not a high demand design.

However, most of our work is still providing contemporary style simple brass, bronze, copper, stainless steel, polished stainless, steel and so on. These contemporary styles can be found all over our website. Here’s a link (here) to send you right to our contemporary styles.

All of these styles are regular hand-picked by the interior designers that we work with on a day to day basis. You will find many of our mirror designs in hotels, homes and venues across the world.

Another large change we’ve seen is that most of our orders now come from our brochure website design which CreateTheWeb now runs for us. As you can imagine, this is now a larger enquiry source compared to people coming into the shop from the street to purchase bespoke frames and bespoke mirrors.

However, we still have a presence in the town so that people can actually see and feel the products that they would like to buy. We feel that this is important for our industry.

To conclude, we have seen a shift from traditional bespoke mirrors, to the current contemporary styles and a sudden large demand for oxidised “rustic” style mirrors.

We style and design mirrors around our customer’s needs, with all the regular interaction we have, we can definitely see a firm change in needs and designs.

That being said, we create bespoke and made to measure mirrors to any design and size that you are looking for. We have over 50 years of experience with designing mirrors, so if you have any questions or need some advice about the design and style of your new mirror, please give us a call or send us an email and we’d be happy to guide you in the right direction.
